Why Lighting, Sound, and Atmosphere Matter in Worship

by | Oct 7, 2025 | Pastor Letters

One of the Apostle Paul’s great reminders is found in Romans 10:14–15:

“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’”

Hearing the good news of Jesus matters deeply. Scripture also shows us that what people see and feel matters too. So, how do lighting, sound, visuals, and even the feel of the room impact our worship? How do they help us hear and see the good news of Jesus without distraction?

From the reverent descriptions of the tabernacle in Exodus, to the breathtaking imagery of the heavenly realm in Revelation, to the detail of Solomon’s temple, God’s people have always recognized that beauty, care, and attention to the environment can lift hearts toward worship. Even Jesus, when teaching the crowds, stepped into a boat—using the water itself as an amplifier so His voice would carry to the multitudes.

Jesus also said, “Come and see” and later, “Follow me.” Both hearing and seeing are woven into the experience of faith. It reminds us that the environment in which we worship—what we hear, what we see, and even how we feel—matters.

That’s why I want to say a heartfelt thank you to our Media Team, Worship Group and Karen Carps with GuppyFish Web Design. Week after week, they make sure the microphones are working, the lighting is right, the screens are clear, the sound is balanced, and the projection enhances teaching and communication. They do all of this so that nothing distracts us from lifting our hearts to God and hearing His Word proclaimed.

But what about the campus and the space where we gather? The outside tells as much about us as the inside. We are grateful to have a beautiful campus and well-appointed buildings. The Properties Group is responsible for coordinating landscaping, maintenance, cleaning, repairs and mechanical systems such as HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning).

Good lighting, sound, visuals, and climate are not about performance or polish for their own sake. They are about creating space where God’s people can focus on worship, where the message of the Gospel is clear, and where those who come can encounter Jesus without unnecessary distractions. When we don’t give proper attention to these systems and details, people may miss the message we want them to see and hear.

So, the next time you notice a lyric displayed on the screen at just the right moment, or you hear the clarity of a prayer spoken into the microphone, or you simply feel at ease in the sanctuary—you might whisper a prayer of thanks for those who quietly serve behind the scenes. Their ministry helps us to hear and see more clearly the good news of Jesus Christ.

Perhaps God has SHAPED you to serve in one of the areas of Media, Tech, Communications or Properties. If so, or if you’d like to know more, please let us know. Just go to our website and click the “SHAPE” icon on the homepage and complete the form.

We’d love to help you get plugged in!
