Where the Eyes Go, the Car (Church) Will Follow

by | May 27, 2025 | Pastor Letters

On Sunday, May 25th, Alex Palou raced into history as the first Spaniard to win the Indianapolis 500. With speeds over 220 mph, the Indy 500 is more than just a physical or mechanical test—it’s a test of vision. Drivers are taught this simple but powerful principle: “The car will steer where your eyes go.” I learned this principle firsthand when I participated in the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Richmond Raceway some years ago. It was a vivid lesson in how focus and direction shape every movement—especially at high speeds.

This same idea shows up in other high-speed environments. Pilots fly by anticipating the horizon. Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky once said he skated not to where the puck is, but to where it’s going. In each case, success depends on the ability to anticipate—not just react.

Before race day, drivers spend hours studying the track—learning every curve, visualizing their line, and planning their strategic moves. Their performance is not based on instinct alone; it’s rooted in preparation and vision.

That same principle holds true for the church. We, too, navigate an environment full of complexity and change. If we lose sight of our God-given direction, we risk drifting. As Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (KJV).

But the church is not called to drift! We are called to look ahead with spiritual eyes, to sense where the Spirit is leading, and to move forward in faith

Jesus prayed for His followers in John 17:20–26, asking that they would be unified in love and mission. Psalm 133 echoes this, celebrating how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity. Unity and vision go hand in hand—and when both are present, God commands His blessing.

At HRBC, we have been given a clear, Spirit-led foundation through our five visionary pillars

  • Worship – exalting God together
  • Discipleship – growing in Christlikeness
  • Fellowship – building authentic community
  • Outreach – sharing the love of Christ through our faith stories
  • Missions – joining God’s work in Bon Air and to the ends of the earth

These aren’t just programs—they are the path forward, our spiritual “track map,” guiding how we serve, grow, and impact our world.

As Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight (NIV).

When we fix our eyes on Jesus and follow the vision He’s given, we will find ourselves moving forward united, faithful, and Spirit-led

Here are some reflection questions for this week…

  1. In which of the five vision areas—Worship, Discipleship, Fellowship, Outreach, or Missions—is God calling you to grow or serve? Remember, sometimes God leads you where you may not feel equipped but where there is a need
  1. How are you helping our church move forward in unity and faithfulness to Christ’s vision
  1. Where is the Spirit leading us next—and are your eyes fixed on that future?

In Christ’s love,
