Letters from the Pastor

Step Out of the Traffic

by | Jul 6, 2023 | Pastor Letters

The psalmist wrote, “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)  This is one of my favorite passages in all of scripture. I especially appreciate the way that Eugene Peterson translated it in his contemporary paraphrase,

“Step out of the traffic! Take a long,
loving look at me, your High God,
above politics, above everything.”

The Message Translation

One of my personal/ spiritual goals is to “step out of the traffic” and be present in the moments that God gives me. I have come to anticipate–more and more–the quiet moments before the sun’s light pierces the darkness of the dawn. To listen intently to the songbirds as they awaken. To marvel at the way flowers open to a new day. To take time to stretch my body, to breathe deeply and to taste the rich flavor of freshly brewed,  bold coffee.

This past year I have been learning how to welcome moments with my family, especially now that Isabella has been off at college. Melanie and I became empty nesters the moment we dropped her off at campus on August 19, 2022. We have missed her so much and act giddy when we get to talk with her or FaceTime with her! We have discovered the new normal of going for walks and just talking about our day. These moments are very special and to be cherished. Isabella had a great first year at James Madison University and is home for the summer, working two jobs. It has been wonderful to have her home and I relish the time that we can spend together, whether watching baseball or getting Starbucks.

Time seems to go by more quickly the older I get. (I know time is constant, but it sure feels this way!) One of the ways I have experienced this is by observing the heavens at night with my telescope. When I focus on the moon or Venus or Mars, it only takes a few moments for them to be out of the view of my scope. I have to readjust it frequently. This tells me that the earth is always rotating on its axis and revolving around the sun. The second hand is always ticking. Time does not stand still, though we desperately want it to.

So, we must be intentional in stepping out of the traffic to acknowledge God who is in, among and through all things. To be present in the moment. To listen well. To eat slowly. Not to be rushed. To be bored sometimes. Read a poem. Listen to music. Cherish time with those you value.

Summer gives gifts like this. All we have to do is be still, open our palms and receive what God gives with gratitude in our hearts.

Enjoy these weeks of summer!
