Looking Toward the Light

by | Jul 1, 2025 | Pastor Letters

I’ve always loved sunflowers. They make me smile! Their golden blooms stand tall and bright—never failing to bring warmth to any corner of a yard or garden. Over the years, I’ve planted sunflowers in spots that get plenty of sun, often experimenting with different varieties. Last year, I had great success! Several plants took root, bloomed beautifully, and I even saved some seeds and replanted them this year.

Well, as it often goes with gardening—and with life—plans don’t always unfold the way we expect. The birds and the bunny rabbits found those seeds before they could even sprout. Maybe they were watching as I planted. I figured that was the end of the sunflower story for this season.

But then something unexpected happened!

One day earlier this summer, I noticed a single sprout pushing up through the grass in the center of our backyard—right in the middle of the lawn! It looked suspiciously like a sunflower, and sure enough, that’s exactly what it turned out to be. I placed a wire cage around it for protection, and it kept growing. Today, it stands nearly five feet tall and has already produced several beautiful blooms, each about five inches across.

Every morning, when I look out the kitchen window, I’m greeted by this hardy, voluntary sunflower. Its bright yellow petals open wide as it follows the arc of the sun. In the early morning hours, the blooms face east. By evening, they’ve turned toward the west. It’s remarkable, really, if you think about it. The flower instinctively knows where to turn. The neat thing is that’s just how God designed it.

It reminds me of the way in which God desires us to live as His children—to seek His light and to follow Him as we go through our days. Like that sunflower, we are called to orient our lives toward the source of life and hope. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). And in Psalm 84:11, we’re reminded, “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor.”

Sunflowers don’t just offer beauty. They provide joy, nourishment, and purpose. They serve as pollinators and offer seeds to birds, to bunnies—and to us, too! I mean, can you even imagine a summer baseball game without sunflower seeds in the dugout?

These flowers reflect the beauty of God’s creation and always bring a smile when I see them—especially this one, standing alone yet fully alive and purposeful. I’m glad this volunteer sunflower took root this summer. It’s a small but steady reminder that even when our plans go awry, God can bring unexpected blessings into the middle of our lives—right in the middle of the lawn, even.

May this little sunflower continue to encourage us to seek the light of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. And may we remember His words to us: “You are the light of the world.” As we follow His light, may we also reflect it, shining with joy, purpose, and grace into the world around us.

In His light,

Absolutely! I have experienced So many of God’s unexpected blessings! I’m so thankful. I love your analogy of the sunflower following the sun. I’ll never look at a sunflower again as just another flower.
