How to Tell Your Story

by | Jun 28, 2023 | Pastor Letters

Everyone has a story to be told.  I have heard it said, “There’s a book inside every person just waiting to be written.”  As Christians, we can think of saying it this way: “Every Christian has a personal testimony waiting to be shared.”  On Sunday June 25, the theme for the sermon was baptism, celebrating new life as believers.  We focused on Romans 6:1-11 where the Apostle Paul reminds us that baptism is symbolic of our salvation, redemption and new life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Our baptism tells a story!

Paul writes:

“Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.”

Romans 6:3-5, NIV

For the personal application of the sermon, I encouraged each person to write out their personal testimony.  You can use pen and paper, type it up or even dictate it into your phone.  Whatever works!  Think about how much this would mean to your family.  Your testimony is also a way to be on mission with God, telling others about your own personal experience with Jesus.  You have a story, and it can make a life-changing difference in others.  On Sunday, I challenged our members to begin writing their testimonies this week and as a goal, to conclude it by summer’s end.  Then, as God leads, perhaps some would be willing to share it in a worship service, allow it to be included in one of our church publications or even on the church website!

Our God-sized Dream for Outreach expresses the goal that “Everyone is passionate and prepared to share their faith story.”  In other words, we hope that every member of our church is equipped to tell their faith story when prompted by the Spirit.

If you are interested and need some guidance, I would be grateful to talk with you.  Below is an outline that might be a help.  I accessed it online from ChatGPT with the following inquiry: “Format for a Christian’s personal testimony.”

A personal testimony is a powerful way for Christians to share their faith journey and how they have experienced God’s work in their lives. While there is no specific format that every Christian must follow, here is a suggested structure for a personal testimony:

1. Introduction: Begin by introducing yourself and providing some background information, such as your name, where you’re from, and any relevant details about your upbringing or religious background.

2. Pre-conversion: Share briefly about your life before you became a Christian.  Discuss any struggles, doubts, or emptiness you may have experienced during this time.  This sets the stage for highlighting the transformation that took place in your life.

3. Conversion: Describe the circumstances or events that led to your decision to become a Christian.  Share the key moments, experiences, or encounters with God that opened your heart to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

4. Transformation: Reflect on the changes that occurred in your life after accepting Christ.  Discuss the impact of your relationship with Jesus on your thoughts, attitudes, behaviors, and relationships.  Highlight any specific areas where God has worked in your life, such as healing, forgiveness, deliverance, or restoration.

5. Faith journey: Share about your ongoing walk with God and how your faith has grown and deepened over time.  Discuss the ways in which you have experienced God’s presence, guidance, and provision in your life.  You can also include any challenges or struggles you’ve faced and how your faith has sustained you through them.

6. Gospel message: Take a moment to explain the central message of the Gospel — God’s love for humanity, our need for salvation, and the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Share how this message has personally impacted your life and why you believe it to be true.

7. Encouragement: Conclude your testimony by offering words of encouragement or a specific message to those listening.  Share any lessons you have learned, scriptures that have been meaningful to you, or practical ways others can grow in their faith.

Remember, the most important aspect of a personal testimony is authenticity.  Share from your heart and be genuine in expressing your experiences and emotions.  Tailor your testimony to your audience and keep it concise, focusing on the most impactful parts of your journey.

Everyone has a story to be told . . .

In Christ’s care,
