Emmanuel: The Light for Our Journey

by | Nov 25, 2025 | Pastor Letters

Advent invites us to lift our eyes once again toward the horizon where God’s promises break into our world. It’s a season when the church leans forward in hope, remembers God’s faithfulness, and prepares our hearts to welcome Christ—who comes to us as Emmanuel, God with us. This year at HRBC, our theme is Emmanuel: The Light for Our Journey. In a world that often feels dim or unsettled, we turn to the One whose light guides, steadies, and renews us.

Two passages from Isaiah help set our course: “Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord” (Isaiah 2:5), and “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light” (Isaiah 9:2). These ancient words remind us that faith is both invitation and promise. We are called to walk—and we are assured that God shines light on the path ahead.

Each Sunday of Advent, we’ll reflect on one aspect of Christ’s light as revealed in Scripture:

  • Advent 1 – Hope (Nov. 30)

Rev. Sara Hubble leads us in Isaiah 2:1–5 with “Emmanuel: The Hope for Our Journey.” We begin by remembering that God’s future shapes our present, and hope lights the first candle.

  • Advent 2 – Peace (Dec. 7)

Through Isaiah 11:1–10, “Emmanuel: The Peace for Our Journey” invites us to imagine the world Christ makes possible—where righteousness, reconciliation, and God’s justice take root.

  • Advent 3 – Joy (Dec. 14)

Isaiah 35:1–10 gives us a picture of joy breaking into the wilderness. We’ll explore “Emmanuel: The Joy for Our Journey,” trusting that God can bring life where we least expect it.

  • Advent 4 – Love (Dec. 21)

Matthew 1:18–25 turns our attention to Joseph’s story and the meaning of Christ’s name—Emmanuel. “Emmanuel: The Love for Our Journey” helps us see God’s love at work in surprising places and through courageous obedience.

  • Christmas Eve – Christ (Dec. 24, 5:00 PM)

We gather for one family-friendly Candlelight service, reflecting on Luke 2:1–20 and the message “Emmanuel: The Light for Our Journey.” Together we will celebrate the Light who has come and who continues to shine in us and through us.

Advent at HRBC also offers many ways to grow, serve, and celebrate. Our website includes devotionals, family activities, a churchwide Advent calendar, and tools to help you mark this season with meaning. As you participate in worship, serve our community, or enjoy fellowship events, we invite you to share the journey with others using #HRBCAdvent

And if this season is heavy for you—or if you need someone to pray with you—please let us know. Our staff and Deacons are honored to walk alongside you. For prayer requests, click here

My prayer is that this Advent will renew your hope, steady your steps, and fill your heart with the light only Christ can give. Let’s walk together in that light as we prepare to celebrate His coming.

Grace and peace,
