Basketball Season is Here! 

HRBC and Bon Air Baptist Church partner each year to lead an Upward Basketball ministry. No matter your expertise in basketball there are many opportunities for you to be involved. You can commit as much or as little time as you are available. 

Volunteer Opportunities:

1.  Prayer Partner:  By far, this is one of the most important Upward volunteers.  Click on the “Upward – 100 Days of Prayer” guide listed to the right.  Each player, coach, referee, gym monitor, game day coordinator and family is blessed by your prayers.

2.  Gym Monitor: This may be the easiest job that exists!  Volunteers make sure the building is unlocked before practice, be a presence in the gym during practices (you can read, listen to your ipod, do some homework, watch practices .....) and then turn off lights & lock-up when everyone is finished.

Time commitment:  One night a week for 3 hours.

3.  Upward Coach:  Individuals are paired with other parents/adults to guide children through the Upward season.  Training is required.  (See training opportunities in the schedule posted below.)  Not only do Coaches teach basic basketball skills, they help nurture God’s love in the lives of their team.  Weekly devotions, positive reinforcement, encouraging words are all a part of the Upward Coach’s job.

Time commitment:  One (1 hour) weekly practice & one (1 hour) Saturday game.

4.  Upward Referee:  These volunteers are some of the most beloved members of the Upward team.  Referees have the opportunity to guide and direct the skills of each player.  Opportunities for instructing and guiding players are abundant.  Referees have fun watching the pride in a player when he/she masters a new skill or sinks that first basket!  Training is required.  (See training opportunities in the schedule posted below.)

Time commitment:  Saturday games are one hour.  You may referee more than one game!

5.  Game Day Coordinator:  One of the best ways to observe the overall energy and excitement of the Upward season!  Coordinators keep score/time clock, share a 2 minute half-time devotion, announce the names of the players before each game, make sure games are running on time.  Training is provided for anyone wanting to assume any/all of these responsibilities. 

Time commitment:  Saturday games are one hour each.  You may volunteer for more than one game!

October 3 – Online Registration opens
November 12 – Evaluations 8:30-11:30 am (At Bon Air Baptist and HRBC)
November 14 – Evaluations 6-8:30 pm
November 15 – Evaluations 6-8:30 pm

December 1 - Coaches' Training 6-9 pm at BABC
December 3 - Coaches' Training 8:30-11:30 am at BABC

December 5 - Practices Start

December 19 - Referee Training

January 2 - Practices Resume

January 7 - First game

Winter Weather Guidelines
If Chesterfield County Schools are closed or let out early due to winter weather then all practices are cancelled. Decisions about games will be made by 5 PM on Friday. If there is no school because of inclement weather on Friday, games will not be held on Saturday.
