iWorship Series : Week 2 Music

This week at Elevate we are going to talk about how we use music to worship. Music is a huge part of most teenagers lives. It also is a huge part of our worship every week.

The problem with music and worship comes when people try to establish one style as better than another. Churches split over this all the time. (I've seen one this year) What we hope to communicate to students this week is that music style doesn't matter. Organs are not better than guitars. Praise choruses are not better than hymns. It's not about style, it's about content. Once we get past that, we can all worship God more.

We will be talking about how we shouldn't let musical style limit our worship. It's ok to have preferences but if you find yourself in a situation that isn't your preference, IT'S OK! You can still worship God.

We will also encourage students to worship with music OUTSIDE of church. It's something that has made a tremendous difference in my life. God used music to turn my life around so it's something that I believe whole heartedly. I would encourage you and your students to stock up on music that is worshipful. If you need suggestions let me know and I'll help you find stuff.

Discussion Questions

1. Ask your student which worship style they prefer on Sunday Morning. Why?

2.  Ask if they have any music that worships God outside of church? (if so, what bands?)

3. If they have a few cds by Christian artists, stop by the store and pick them up another one. Or you could offer to buy them a cd by their favorite band on iTunes.

4. If they don't have any cds by Christian artists, ask what their favorite musical style is. Do some research (or ask me) and then follow up on #3.

It might be awkward to try having spiritual conversations with your child. It's ok. They think it's awkward also. This requires time and patience. It also requires authenticity. If you have those three things, it should become easier over time.

see you next week!
