You chose ME?
Luke 1:46-48a NCV Then Mary said, “My soul praises the Lord; my heart rejoices in God my Savior, because he has shown his concern for his humble servant girl.”
One of the greatest joys in my life is walking into work, especially on Sunday mornings. My brain is always in fast-forward: Check the preschool rooms; check the Welcome Desk; check my mailbox; check my voicemail; double-check my worship responsibilities. But all the fast-forward stops when I see the first person, because I’m genuinely happy to see them. It stops and slows even more when I encounter the first child of the day – and each time I encounter another child, it stops and slows even more.
All those encounters are etched in my mind. The happy encounters with smiling babies reaching out their arms to me. The heart-wrenching hugs and prayers with friends who are hurting. The catching up with friends around a table in the commons. The stuff that makes life more than just trudging from one event to the next, ticking tasks off a list.
As my heart swells with joy at these shared moments, I am reminded of the words Mary spoke in response to the angel who brought the remarkable news that SHE was chosen to be the mother of God on earth. Today, I am humbled by the fact that God chose to come to ME, and that I am allowed to be part of the Jesus story. I am amazed that God has shown concern for ME, an often not-so-humble, not-so-servant girl.
The realization that I am a regular old girl, in a regular old town, and yet, not only noticed by the great God of the universe, but INVITED by that God to be part of the story of Jesus present here on earth is at once overwhelming and humbling.
I pray that as we explore and experience Joy this Advent season, you will rejoice as you see yourself in the bigger story of Jesus. Humble you. Beautiful you. Loved you. The YOU that Jesus came to earth for.
